Major Puran
Singh Bika of 13 Grenadiers (Ganga Risala) belonged
to Bikaner in Rajasthan. During the
965 Indo-Pak war, Major Singh was commanding a long range border
patrol in Rajasthan. During the early hours of 31 Oct 1965,
he bumped into a strongly held and well dug in enemy position
and some of his men were encircled by the enemy. Major Singh
deployed his remaining men so that the enemy was himself almost
encircled.
When the enemy opened heavy fire,
Major Singh led his men and returned the fire so effectively
that the enemy abandoned the position. He was also instrumental
in foiling three successive enemy attacks on another position.
Subsequently, he was killed in an enemy ambush.
Throughout, Major Puran Singh
displayed exemplary courage and unflinching determination in
the best traditions of the Indian Army. He was posthumosly awarded
with Vee Chakra.
On 14th March 1976, the district
authorities of Bikaner raised a statue of Major Puran Singh at
Bikaner to perpetuate his memory. Earlier, in 1966, Gajner Road
and a power house were named after him. |
